Adding File Attachment Security

Adding File Attachment Security

One of the big problems with previous versions of Outlook Express was that there wasn't much in the way of restricting e-mail attachments.
Since most viruses are being spread through these attachments, the capability is now available to select which ones you want to accept.

1. Go to Tools / Options / Security
2. Check Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus
3. If you try an open one of these attachments, you will see a message
OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail: filename

Initially this can restrict more file types than you would like.
To be able to turn off the restriction for selected file extensions:

1. Start the Windows Explorer
2. Go to Tools / Folder Options
3. Click on the File Types tab
4. Scroll to the extension you want to change
5. Click on the Advanced button
6. Uncheck Confirm open after download
7. This will immediately allow you to open attachments with that particular extension. The example below shows the setting to open ZIP files.
